Essex Police and Essex County Council Trading Standards are working in partnership to raise awareness of the activities of cold callers, rogue traders and bogus callers currently operating in this area.
Rogue traders are actively targeting residents in this area into having household repairs or household maintenance work carried out. This work is often unnecessary or may be offered at a “bargain price” which will then escalate as the work is undertaken.
These traders will often try to frighten residents into having work carried out e.g. your chimney is dangerous, your roof tiles are loose or that tree needs cutting back. The trader may start by carrying out small low cost jobs before moving on to larger projects asking for money at regular intervals, in the form of cheques and cash.
These traders use many methods of operation to rip off their victims from befriending the householder and “helping them” to using threats to obtain money.
You can assist us to stop this trading activity by not agreeing to any work on your property, via doorstep traders and by keeping an eye on elderly or vulnerable residents living in your street or your neighbourhood.

Dealing with doorstep callers...
DO talk to someone straight away if you are concerned about a doorstep caller - call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0845 4040506
DO be confident on your doorstep - most problems can be avoided by just firmly closing your door
DO keep your money safely in the bank or building society - not at home
DO check that your front and back door is locked - you can get help if you need extra security
DO use your safety chain or look through the window - before you open your door
DON’T believe an unknown caller who asks to come in to your home - tell them to make an appointment and firmly close the door
DON’T let anyone in from the water board, gas board, or any other ‘board’ - they don’t exist anymore
DON’T buy from unknown doorstep sellers - they can be selling dusters or driveways, but don‘t part with your cash
DON’T be worried about reporting your concerns - let someone know
